We are now finalizing our next production of Wool Coats and Suits for Boys, soon to be made in Italy. This was not a routine decision. We (like all our competitors) considered the current economic chaos in the USA, the weak dollar and the emergence of Made in China clothing.

As the suit season at www.boysitaliansuits.com slows done at this time of the year I took a few days off. As is typical of me I spent a day off shopping a well known New York fashion mecca, b. It was amazing that they had a limited selection, with only 12 suits that were made in Italy. The sales help seemed to know very little, telling me she had no idea where the suits were made. For the record, they had suits made in China and India and no, they were not made to the quality level of an Italian suits for a boy.
I also did a final selection of fine wool fabric for boys suits, next season will have some good surprises.

We just got in two shipments of boys suits from Italy and our suits are literally flying. While we at http://www.boysitaliansuits.com are quite used to seasonal rush for suits for First Communion even we are happily overwhelmed. The rush may be related to some favorable mention in the press, it was then picked up by news syndicates all over the world. We are filling orders for navy suits, we do three different fine wool fabrics and each customer has been getting their choice shipped the day they ordered it. Although this sounds simple some suits were driven to UPS because the pickup had left for the day. We are also shipping many suits by Air, although it is usually not necessary what else do you do with a repeat customer from Australia for two more suits?

While we expect the rush to subside we are finalizing orders for August delivery at this time.

We are really proud that our suits for boys have come in really nice this season. It is the culmination of a long process that starts almost a year in advance.
We carefully spent 3 days in Italy scanning through several thousand swatches of fine wool. We selected swatches for our boys suits out of many super 130, super 120 and super 100 wool suit samples. We ordered the finest of these with little regard for the cost as our goal is to have the finest quality available in the USA. We follow through with a final control round by reviewing all production wool rols before being cut into boys suits. Only then are the boys suits finshed and shipped on hangers to our American warehouse ready to be shipped to customers of www.boysitaliansuits.com.

We are very lucky that we were able to arrange for an emergency supplement of our famous navy suits for boys. While it sounds quite simple to keep nice suits in stock we were caught unaware by some unforeseen demand for simple but fine navy blue boys suits. The demand might well have been caused by some bad luck for a competitor, we heard of some not nice suits that had to be junked. Boys coat reorder selling out!

Those that follow our adventures know how hard we work on getting our coats for boys perfect. It still surprises us how quickly we sell out. This year the coats had a great start and our urgent wool boys coat reorder went in in early September, just after the long Italian vacation month (yes, the mills are closed for all of August). With all the Italian time needed to weave, shade and send it to us for approval and then our boys suit and coat factory had to manipulate the schedule to get our production done. All during this time we were running out of coats so we actually overnighted some of the coats to help those needing coats November 10-13. The rest of our coats should arrive this week by slow air.
Those reading this blog for the first time are probably wondering whether we who work at www.boysitaliansuits.com are a bit nuts, it sure seems like we need to get a life; actually these suits and coats are our life and we really enjoy it so don't worry.

We have basically finished the 2006 Communion suit for Boys season and we thank all those that have purchased and also sent their kind words of thanks. Next on the agenda is a busy trip to Italy to select the fine Italian wool for boys suits to be used for your next boys suit. Politically there is a problem of our dollar falling again based on expectation sthat this will stop interest rates from rising and thus capital flows to countries with better interest returns. While we do import we are not traitors; What is good for the U.S.A. is fine for us. It would be nice if our government lowered the duty on suits though.

2/12 Yes, we are in the midst of a major blizzard at our New York Headquarters, this gives us time to reflect on recent news. Michael, our boys suit manager just returned from Pitti, the International Italian Children's dress clothing Fashion show. Prices were mostly mostly high to absurdly high. We did manage negotiate some great deals for our clientele. Our volume and ability to pay immediately definitely entices boys suit manufacturers to lower their prices. We are also glad that we just unpacked loads of Lily Gaufrette as well as a huge boys suit order, great for First Communion, Bar Mitzvah or any other use.

9/28 We are gratified to be busier than expected. The need and demand for finer quality boys suits continues unabated, there seems to be a separate, unrelated market for lower quality boys suits. We are in danger of running out of some odd sizes in navy and black, we have already ordered the super 100 fine quality wool from fine Italian mills and should have our boys suit deliveries soon.

Michael has just returned from Pitti Bimbo, the Boys suit and Children's clothing fashion event of the Year. Indeed, Pitti was weaker than usual. Many top tier buyers, from all parts of the world are playing it very tight. The consensus remains that the Italian Boys suits are in a special category, the suppliers are continuing business as usual and rewarding their long term clients with even nicer production. 04/28 With the peak season of fine boys suit sales for both Passover and Communion just winding up, we are still filling last minute orders as we ponder our progress. We are very proud of the quality of our boys suits from Italy. The quality is so much better than anything out of China that China is not an alternative for anybody that wants a nice suit. While the label might say all the right things the Chinese suits just do not look right, both on the hanger and on the boy.

We at BoysItalianSuits.com have been swamped with many last minute orders. The interesting thing is that most of these clients actually ordered boys suits earlier in the season from their local store. In almost every case they were strung along until the suits were delivered on Thursday, and these suits were not fit to put on a boy. Obviously, many of these customers reached us and we just happened to get a reorder on Friday morning, 04/15 at 10 AM. The moral of the story is, for the client, do not buy stories, buy suits in hand and visible. For the vendor, do not try to copy what we do, we make it look easy but it actually takes a lot of work to make it look easy.
We actually did not enjoy the extra business that came due to a competitors loss but did enjoy helping customers that really needed the suit and were worried.

The updates have been a little late as we have been very busy selling boys suits. While we use the plural tense, we always remember that it is often a suit for a boy, each is an individual. We are very gratified that clients have been driving up to 3 hours to get one of our suits for their boy. We can honestly say that even online, anybody that tries our suits keeps them.

We have seen several brands of suits for boys that were made in China. Yes, they are suits and it is clothing but there have always been cheaper suits that are just not as nice. We bet that while these suits will find their place in the market, perhaps displacing those made in India, most discerning parents looking for a fine boys suit for his Communion or Bar Mitzvah will opt for the nicest boys suit.

Our Boys suit manager, Michael just phoned in from Pitti Bimb, the childrens fashion and boys suit show in Firenze, Italy.
Michael cruised the boys suit aisles Friday morning and also spent Saturday evening at the mini show at the Baglioni Hotel. They usually have a group of vendors that are more willing to modify their styles of coats and suits for boys. The initial report is that they are not very willing to lower their prices, we will just have to work with those sources that have a leaner operation, they tend to produce better suits anyway. Selecting suits for boys; how we do it!

We at www.boysitaliansuits.com are now at the tail end of our preparations for boys suits to be worn Fall and Winter, 2005. This is a long process that began months ago with visits to mills, fabric representatives and suit manufacturers in Italy. We try to select the nicest fabrics available, while avoiding loud patterns that will turn out too garish. Parents tend to go conservative, after all many of these suits are used for First Communion, Bar Mitzvah and Weddings. We winnow the selection down to the really nicest and then focus on quality; a super 120 will usually make the cut rather than a super 100. We consider exceptions for mills that understate the quality. We pass each fabric past Franco, the owner of what is arguably the best suit manufacturer in Italy. Only after passing muster is the order finalized and we begin the next step

Bar Mitzvah Suits for Boys

With the Holiday season winding down and my last blog about Communion suits I have been reminded about Bar Mitzvah suits. Here comes the sixty second version!
Under Judaic law, young men become of age at their 13th birthday, this is when they are subject to the do's and don'ts of the religion, the Mitzvahs. This is the origin of the name Bar Mitzvah. It is celebrated as a festive event and the young man is dressed up in a beautiful suit.
A Bar Mitzvah suit is most often navy blue. There is no law or requirement, it is just a nice color for most kids and the least controversial. We at www.BoysItalianSuits.com offer many options and find that many clients are now experimenting with bold stripes and patterns.

Its that time of the year again. New Year is just a fading memory and the calls have begun. I could sense some of the parents are a bit worried. They all report the same story; they have gone from store to store at the mall and they can not find a nice suit. It seems most stores follow the herd mentality. They all avoid selling boys suits because there is no voume or money in it.
We at www.BoysItalianSuits.com agree and disagree. It might seem easier to fit a boy in a bathing suit and T-shirt or a fleece top. There may be more volume in it. We have chosen the dress up look. The proud satisfaction we get when we see the parents eying their child's image or the letters of thanks we get from internet clients make it worthwhile.

Spent some time comparison shopping boys suits

I guess this is what they call a busman's Holiday. On those rare occasions that I have a free day I spend it comparison shopping suits, specifically suits for boys. I discovered that many suits out there have Italian names but are made in cheap labor countries. I was even shocked to note that a famous brand, new to the boys suit business, claims it's suits are made to the same standards as it's mens suits BUT they are not. Back to travel stories, The last time I landed at FRA (Frankfurt) on the redeye from JFK, the plane pulled up to a gate near B-22. It seems the gate was designated for Shenge (intra- European) which require no passport check. Since we were not allowed to deplane until this mess was cleared up, I and all my fellow passengers sat there and stewed for an extra 30 minutes. Not a good show. It was all forgotten when I got to the FRA Airport Supermarket, a really great place to visit, the food is also pretty good. Just do not forget to allow time to reclear security.

Boy's Suits from Italy, Made Where?

What is going on now?
As major sellers of boy's suits (www.BoysItalianSuits.com) we seem to be on the list of people to be sold to. Sometimes this is humorous, like the poor chap that tried so hard to sell us very nice suits, not realizing that we sold them to his boss. Sometimes it is scary, like the Italian suits that were "Italian suits", made in India.
Make no mistake, we like and respect the Indian nation. We respect their acumen with computers. We do not respect any firm that misleads and pretends an Indian suit is like an Italian.
The fact remains that for some reason, suits made by fine suit firms in Italy look better. It is not magic, it is just attention to detail and less skipping of steps. It is also that when things go slow there is little pressure to rush. Our suppliers always try to deliver a perfiect garment. They are not attentive to delivery schedules, at times to our chagrin. We have also noted with pride that the employees all earn a living wage, no sweatshop labor here. There may be a slight cost advantage in the fwct that management is paid about the same as lower emplyees, there are not layers of higher paid execs doing nothing all day. Perhaps our major firms, should have followed this model, thinking of Enron, Tyco and similar.

My recent buying trip to Italy, adventures

Just got back from my semi-annual trip to scout out the newest in Boy's suits and place orders.

The Boy's suit stories follow, first the adventures.
Imagine landing at an Airport after a transatlantic flight and being told the ground crews would not let you deplane. That delay was 30 minutes.
Imagine showing up for a flight from Milano to Bari and being told Volare Airlines just folded, your flight and airline no longer exist. It was sure great to check into the Sheraton Nicholas Bari, my home away from home, I love the Hotel and everybody there, including the Venezia socccer team (see the photo of the team and me at boysitaliansuits.com).
At the end it all worked out because the Italians are great people, great friends and they make the most phenominal boy's suits and coats. While we discussed the usual variety of issues, it still came back to price, In my words, the Euro is too strong and they have to lower the price in order to stay in the Boys suit business. They agreed and we probably can hold our prices for another season, great news!
